I would like to throw out there that the more syntactic sugar a language has, the easier it is for a beginner to pick up. This fact coupled with the strong community support for beginners makes Ruby a better first language imho. I liked that it allowed me to focus less on learning syntax and more on learning oop and general programming principles.
